SOUND/IMAGE Research Group at the University of Greenwich, London, acquires IKO system (March 2021) further expanding their potential for world leading research in spatial audio aesthetics.

The IKO is a revolutionary new 3D audio speaker. It is the most compact speaker system based on 3D audio technology, Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA), available in the world today.

Developed by Sonible from research undertaken at the IEM Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics, Graz, this unique instrument is able to send focused sound beams in any direction desired – made possible through its unique form and the use of complex algorithms.

Using wall and ceiling reflections to establish a unique and distinct sound space, the IKO surrounds listeners in the media and artistic event. Highly immersive sonic experiences are now possible using just this one single compact 3D audio speaker.

The SOUND/IMAGE Research Group was awarded a Research Capital Investment grant by the University of Greenwich to fund the purchase of this unique & innovative technology.

Ongoing and future research projects will utilise the IKO to explore new possibilities in immersive audio composition.
